Authorities said 75-year-old Robert Towmey of the Town of Salem called about 9 a.m. and said he couldn't get out of his basement because the door was too hot to open.
Firefighters responded and pulled Towmey from his house. He was taken to St. Catherine's Hospital in Pleasant Prairie, where he died.
Authorities say they are still investigating, but they think a heating unit might have caused the fire.
