Eugene Lawrence Smith

WHITEHALL — Eugene Lawrence Smith, 85, of Whitehall died at home Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in the presence of family after a brief battle with cancer.

Born on Dec. 18, 1922, to Lyle and Edith (Warren) Smith of Whitehall, Gene was baptized and confirmed at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and attended Whitehall schools where he participated in football, basketball and track. He enjoyed industrial arts and learned many of the skills that would help him become an itinerant builder, woodsman, hobbyist and a Mr. Fix-It.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in World War II as a shipfitter repairing damaged vessels.

Following his discharge, he returned to Whitehall to lead an active and fulfilling life that blossomed with his marriage in 1947 to Mavis Gabriel, a secretary and daughter of Norwegian immigrants. Their home, often fueled by a wood stove and filled with the aroma of fresh-baked cookies, was a gathering spot for neighbors and friends and became the epicenter for their growing family and offspring.

Gene ran a school bus service in Whitehall and Blair with his brother, Norm, before being hired by Briggs Transportation in 1949. At Briggs he became a reliable and durable King of the Road, driving a semi-truck for more than 35 years until his retirement in 1984. He also worked briefly as head of maintenance at the Trempealeau County Courthouse.

Blessed with a mechanical mind and a sly, playful wit, Gene approached life with a carefree, can-do attitude. He tackled shop projects, yard work and jigsaw puzzles with equal zeal. He was deceptively sharp at the card table and legendary with a dice box, and his hearty laugh could fill both a tavern and a family room. He was an avid sports fan who followed the Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packers.

Gene was a devoted family man whose lap provided a comfortable perch for babies and toddlers and served as a launching pad for countless hugs, winks and playful tricks. And his strict German upbringing was a guiding influence that helped keep matters under control.

He is survived by Mavis and their five children, Peggy (Leroy) Nelson of La Crosse, Sue (Vitus) Kampa of Whitehall, Mary (Mike) Teigen of Austin, Texas, Jim (Sue) Smith of Bradenton, Fla.; and Jeanne (Pete) Semb of Whitehall; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 11 a.m. in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church with burial in Lincoln Cemetery, both in Whitehall. Pastor Thomas W. Smith will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post 191.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. in Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to the services at the church on Saturday.
