The 53-year-old Norman is only one shot behind K.J. Choi as they enter today’s third round at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
Three weeks after marrying tennis great Chris Evert, Norman’s honeymoon continued with his second straight par 70 on Friday, leaving him only one stroke off Choi’s lead.
Norman won the British Open twice in his prime, but by his own admission, he never thought it was possible this year.
“The Shark” won what the Brits call “The Open,” at Turnberry in 1986 and then again at Royal St. George’s seven years later.
Keep in mind “oldster” Julius Boros was 48 years old when he captured the PGA Championship in 1968.
Wouldn’t it be “neat” to see Norman become the oldest player since Boros to win a major championship?
