Cheryl Ann Cowden
VIROQUA, Wis. — Cheryl Ann Cowden, 74, a resident at Bethany Riverside’s Lighthouse in La Crosse passed away peacefully on Monday evening, July 7, 2008.
She was born in Viroqua to Sidney and Irene (Henry) Herried on May 25, 1934, and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1952. After working at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse as a nurse’s aide, she went to Winona’s St. Mary’s Hospital and graduated in 1955 as an LPN. In 1995, she married Darrel G. Cowden of Viroqua (he actually lived a mile down the road). They raised their four children on the Cowden family farm 3 miles south of Viroqua between Pleasant Ridge and Lake Ridge. Cheryl worked briefly at Vernon Memorial Hospital as a nurse followed by 35-plus years working at Bethel Home for the aged, both facilities in Viroqua. She was a longtime member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua and participated and served in many Circle activities over the years.
Cheryl is survived and loved by her four children, Jeff Cowden of Atlanta, Randy (Nora) Cowden of Noblesville, Ind., Shari Cowden of La Crosse and Matt (Robin) Cowden of Mount Horeb, Wis.; five grandchildren, Molly (27) of Appleton, Wis., Benjamin (21) of Noblesville, Ind., and Sydney (7), Lydia (5), Meridith (1½), all from Mount Horeb; her sister, Laura (Michael) Thomas of Gilbert, Ariz.; twin brothers, David (Linda) Herried of Viroqua and Don (Sharon) Herried of Tomah; and numerous aunts, uncles nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Irene Herried; and her husband of 38 years, Darrel Cowden.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Officiating at the service will be Pastors Lindsay Jordan and Margaret Hoversten, with burial to follow in Viroqua Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Thorson-Reetz Funeral Home in Viroqua. Visitation will continue on Friday at the church from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m.
The family would like to thank Bethany Riverside for their dedication and love and care given to Cheryl over the past year.

Luella Marie Ekern
ONALASKA, Wis. — Luella Marie Ekern, 86, of Onalaska died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Onalaska Care Center.
She was born on Aug. 10, 1921, in the town of Washington in rural La Crosse County to William and Marie (Schmitz) Semke. She lived in and around the La Crosse area her whole life. She married Clarence Ekern in 1943 and had three daughters. They later divorced.
Luella enjoyed working as a waitress for many years. She served as food service supervisor at Hillview Heathcare Center until her retirement in 1984. In her earlier years, she enjoyed dancing and gardening. She also loved flowers, reading, spending time with family and was strong in her faith. She was also noted for her excellent cooking skills. In her retirement, she continued to care for her disabled daughter.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary (Milo) Hanson of Red Wing, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Kim (Scott) Bagniefski of Holmen, Wis., Kristi (Doug) Langen of Holmen, Michael (Fran) Hanson of Burnsville, Minn., Bill Hanson of Bloomington, Minn., Eric (Stacy) Hanson of Harlan, Iowa, Mark (Cassi) Hanson of Red Wing, Andy (Nicole) Hanson of Rosemount, Minn., and Katie (Kyle) Tharalson of Ellsworth, Minn.; 17 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucy Strasser of La Crosse, Rita (Bob) Grams of Brownsville, Minn., and Kathleen (Robert) Idecker of Hokah, Minn.; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters, Gloria Ekern and Judi Piepho; a son-in-law, Grant Olsen; and a great grandson, Joshua Tharalson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12, at Cathedral of St. Joseph the Workman in La Crosse. The Rev. Michael Gorman will officiate. Burial will follow in La Crosse’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of services. Memorials may be directed to the Cathedral Parish or Aquinas High School.

WINONA, Minn./HOLMEN, Wis. — Sophia Glebocki, 93, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at Sterling House in Winona.
She was born in Chicago on Jan. 14, 1915, to Valentine and Veronica (Owsiak) Glebocki. Sophia married Anthony Glebocki on June 5, 1937, and he preceded her in death in 1970.
Sophia is survived by a nephew, Ernest (Rita) Modjeski of Holmen.
In addition to her husband, Anthony, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Roman Owsiak; and two stepsisters, Stephanie Modjeski and Betty Hebda.
In accordance with Sophia’s wishes, she is to be cremated and a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Gladys ‘Glady’ D. Schliebe
WEST SALEM, Wis. — Gladys “Glady” D. Schliebe, 84, of West Salem died Monday, July 7, 2008, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born Oct. 12, 1923, in West Salem to Edward and Alice (Hildebrandt) Schneider. Glady graduated from West Salem High School in 1942. On Dec. 12, 1947, she married Carl Schliebe at the Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church Parsonage in West Salem, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1998. Glady was employed at Paramount Photo in West Salem, where she developed black-and-white photos. She was an active member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, West Salem, where she was a member of the Altar Guild and Ladies Aide. Glady was also a member of Berg-Hemker-Olson American Legion Auxiliary Post 51 of West Salem. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, playing cards with her card clubs and, most of all, laughing.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Sheldon) Wood of Lenexa, Kan., and Jeanne (Steve) Arnold of Elgin, Ill.; two sons, Kent Schliebe of La Crosse and David (Kim) Schliebe of Holmen, Wis.; three grandchildren, Bradley Mauderer of Overland Park, Kan., and Ryan and Deniska Schliebe, both of Holmen; one brother, Ray Schneider of Barre Mills, Wis.; and nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Judith Schliebe; two sisters, Helen Schultz and Nora Buroker; five brothers, Herman, Edward, Carl, John, and Robert Schneider; and other relatives.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 500 Park St., West Salem. Dr. Steven Staude will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church on Thursday from 1 p.m. until time of services.

Thomas ‘Tom’ John Gollnick
BANGOR, Wis. — Thomas “Tom” John Gollnick, 54, of Bangor died Sunday, July 6, 2008, after an apparent heart attack at his home.
He was born Feb. 11, 1954, in La Crosse to Robert and Charlotte (Helvig) Gollnick. Tom was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1972 until 1976. On May 22, 1976, he married Janice Niedfeldt in Bangor. They later built their home in rural Burns Township. Tom was a self-employed owner/operator truck driver for the majority of his life. He was very skilled in driving all manner of trucks and took pride in cleanliness, maintenance and safety. Tom’s greatest joys were his two sons, Andrew Thomas and Daniel Arthur. Both boys learned much about trucks and life from their father, and their mutual love and respect were evident.
Tom is survived by his wife, Janice; two sons, Andrew and Daniel; two brothers, Alan (friend, Irene) Gollnick and James (Ruth) Gollnick; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 11, at Presbyterian Church of West Salem, 625 W. Franklin St. Pastor Stephanie M. Steiner will officiate. Fern A. Abts
Fern A. Abts, 92, of La Crosse passed away Sunday, July 6, 2008, in her home.
She was born on July 12, 1915, in La Crosse to Julius and Adeline (Niebuhr) Kircheis. She married Linus M. Abts on Nov. 22, 1952, and had three children: Paul Abts, Ruth (John) Vach and Daniel (Shirley) Abts, all of La Crosse. She is also survived by her sister, June Carr of Western Springs Ill.; grandchildren, Michael, Michelle and David Abts and Kevin and Sara Vach; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 8, 1994; parents; and a twin brother, Glen.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren, camping, traveling and being outdoors. She was a longtime member of Mary Mother of the Church Catholic Church.
A Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 10, at Mary Mother of the Church, 2006 Weston St., La Crosse. The Rev. Douglas Robertson will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum at the Catholic Cemetery in La Crosse. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the church.
