The Wailin’ Jennys, not to be confused with the late country music singer and musician Waylon Jennings, are an unforgettable folk trio from Canada.
I first heard them perform at the Minnesota State Fair years ago. Since then, they’ve been picking up speed and traveling the world.
The three women add some flair to folk music and create amazing harmonies that will keep you coming back for more.
You can check them out and listen to their latest tunes online at www.

If you have a mother, you can understand this blog. Postcards from Yo Momma (www.postcardsfromyomomma.com) is a collection of user-submitted
e-mails from their mothers. For those with especially computer-savvy mothers, they also can submit instant messaging conversations.
The topics covered in this “modern day maternal correspondence” are ones we can all relate to: mothers being upset with grades, funny stories about other family members (especially Dad) and congratulations on accomplishments.

Country music is the last refuge of singing scoundrels. Folk career hit a dead end, Jewel? Drift on down to Nashville, where the pickings are easy. But even the most indiscriminate country fan isn’t going to go for this piffle. On “Perfectly Clear” (Valory), Jewel still has that annoying quavery voice. Pouring on her thickest hickory-smoked accent on “Love is a Garden” only makes it sound more artificial. She does a fair Emmylou Harris imitation on “Loved By You,” but the closest she comes to country is the Charlie Rich feel of “Anyone But You.” And you can thank the song’s co-writer Wynn Varble for that.
Producer John Rich heaps on all the requisite instrumental ingredients: banjo, mandolin, steel guitar, fiddle, dulcimer and honky-tonk piano. But that still don’t make it country.
