Three dead in Med Flight helicopter crash

.
Three people died when a UW Hospital Med Flight helicopter crashed Saturday night near La Crosse.

The helicopter crashed shortly after it took off from the La Crosse Airport at 10:43 p.m. and was found about 8:25 a.m. today off Keil Coulee Road in the town of Medary by Onalaska firefighters searching on foot, said Onalaska fire chief Don Dominick.

Preliminary reports indicate that the UW Hospital helicopter may have flown into a hill and or struck some trees, Margaret Van Bree, chief operating officer of UW Hospital, said at an emotional press conference.

The helicopter crew, which included Dr. Darren Bean, nurse Mark Coyne and pilot Steve Lipperer, were killed.

Bean had worked at UW Hospital since 2002, and Coyne had been there at least 20 years, said Med Flight program director Mark Hanson. Lipperer worked for Air Methods, a Denver company from which the hospital leased the helicopter. He had been a pilot at least 10 years, Med Flight Program Director Mark Hanson said.

The crew had transported a patient from UW Hospital to Gundersen Lutheran Saturday evening and was traveling back to UW Hospital when the helicopter went missing.

The helicopter left Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center about 10:30 p.m. and stopped to fuel at the La Crosse Municipal Airport, said UW Hospital spokesman Ron Gilmore.

Crews began looking for the aircraft about 11:15 p.m. Saturday and narrowed their search from “hits” off nearby cellular towers and calls to 911 from neighbors who heard a loud noise, Dominick said.

Fog, new spring foliage, and rough terrain made the search difficult and wore on the rescuers combing the wooded bluffs, he said.

“Firefighters aren’t going to say they’re tired,” Dominick said. “Fortunately, I know the faces of some.”

La Crosse County Sheriff Steve Helgeson said the weather prohibited the use of airplanes or helicopters.

The helicopter was found about 400 yards from Randy Viner and Deborah Rice-Viner’s house on Keil Coulee Road.

“It hit at the top of the hill and ended up three-fourths of the way down,” Viner said, standing on an old logging trail near the wreckage.

Viner didn’t hear anything when the helicopter crashed but Rice-Viner said she heard what sounded like thunder while reading the paper Saturday night.

“It’s too bad this had to happen to these people,” Viner said. “It is sad that these people got killed here.”

The American Eurocopter EC 13 was leased last year from Air Methods, Van Bree said.

Thirty-three firefighters from Onalaska, West Salem, Holmen and the towns of Campbell and Shelby were involved in the search, and the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Civil Air Patrol and La Crosse County Emergency Management searched as well.

" PACK 4 LIFE: God didn't 'need three more angels'...people don't become angels when they die. Ignorant people say such moronic things when they don't know what else to say.

Angels are Angels, and people are people. This is a tragedy that had nothing to do with God, but rather because we live in a fallen world. Because of that people get sick, accidents happen. God cares, but it not His fault. "

" My brother is a medical helicopter pilot for hospitals in SE Iowa. I work at FSH. Every time I see a helicopter come in or take off at work I think about my brother. Probably more now then ever before. I pray for the families of the three victims and I hope that their trip to transfer the patient to La Crosse was not in vain. "

" I live in between both Lax hospitals, and take a moment to think of the patient or victim being aided by the services of the medflight teams whenever I hear the choppers fly over. This was the case last night when I heard the helicopter, but I have never stopped to think of the professionals who also put there lives at risk to help area citizens in need. My thoughts are with the flightcrew and their families, and will be in the future whenever I hear them coming. "

" What a horrible tragedy. My thoughts go out to the families of these men. As for Honestly, I would hope that if I needed help, there would be people like these men that would be there to help me. "

What a looser! I mean "Honestly" can you think of anyone you'd rather helping you out in a time of need like these folks do?
(Guess I'm just feeding a troll huh?)
Geesh "

" To Honestly: You are an absolute moron. What if it were YOU being transported to Gundersen, and well, let's see, you made it there, but when they were on their way back they crashed. How would you feel? Would you just be like, oh well, or would you feel like these people saved me?!?! Everyone owes these type of people because it is something they take on everyday, saving lives and risking their own. On top of that, their pay isn't the greatest either, for police, fire, EMT, doesn't matter, none of their pay is enough for what type of job they do everyday. "

" To Honestly: you owe them and the police, firemen, EMT's etc. so much because if/when you are lying bloodied and clinging to life by the side of the road because of an accident or lifeless in your home due to a medical emergency, they will come and scoop you up and get bloody, puked on, etc (I'll spare you the rest of the gore) to try and save your life. I'm not scolding you or knocking anyone else's profession or job, it's just that it's different than answering the phone at an office or checking your groceries. The job really is a sacrifice. "

" I agree with "laxthinker", This is a tragedy, as these people take these risks everyday to try to save many lives. My heart goes out to all of the friends and family of these 3 that gave so much and the ultimate sacrifice. "
