Jerry Jones has sympathy for Packers fans with cable trouble

.
MILWAUKEE — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he feels for Packers fans who will miss the team’s Nov. 29 game against the Cowboys.

“How often are you going to have an opportunity to see Brett Favre and a really great Green Bay Packers team play an up-and-coming player that has a lot of flair to his game?” Jones said, referring to Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo. “And a Dallas team that is playing well. If you miss that live, you’ve missed it. And it may not come again.”

Most Wisconsin cable subscribers won’t be able to watch the game on the NFL Network, which is available only on satellite systems or small cable companies. Time Warner and Charter Communications, the two largest cable providers in Wisconsin, have not reached a deal with the network to carry its programming.

And, it’s unlikely they will cut a deal before game time, Jones said Wednesday in a telephone interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

In Milwaukee and Green Bay, the game will be available on regular broadcast television. But in Madison and other spots, it won’t.

Jones suggested football fans drop their cable subscriptions and sign on with one of the satellite television companies that carry the NFL Network.

“They’re not going to get that game on cable,” Jones said. “That’s it, and I don’t think they are going to get it for this season, and certainly not as it pertains to when the Dallas Cowboys play the Green Bay Packers.”

A Time Warner spokeswoman said the company was talking with the NFL.

“Everything comes down to a cost and how it relates to the customer,” spokeswoman Stacy Zaja said. “We feel this programming does belong on a sports tier so that customers who want that type of programming can subscribe to it for their home.”

The NFL Network wants to be carried as part of cable companies’ expanded basic cable.

Wisconsin legislators are drafting legislation to establish an arbitration system to settle disputes between sports networks and cable companies.

In the meantime, Jones said he will continue to try to rally football fans around the NFL Network.

“The reason why we want to develop this network is to expand fan interest and expand fan availability to our ball games,” Jones said. “... The cable companies want to build an asset for themselves that won’t benefit Dallas Cowboys fans.”

" CenturyTel has both NFL Network & Big 10 Network. Charter had the NFL Network but dropped it when COMCAST & TIME WARNER got into a fight with NFL Network. Charter lost money because they are a "p*^^poor operation" "

" Jerry Jones sympathy for the Packers? Come on on what Planet, Jones is loving every minute of it and in hopes to do anyting to help his Dallas football team beat the Packers. Dallas will pull out all of the stops there. The Packers will have a tough game but can beat Dallas away with or without a TV package. "Jones sumpathy". Thats about as funny as George Steinbrenner has sympathy for Brewers. "

" VernonTel is has Big10 and NFL Network. It is too bad they don't offer service in La Crosse! I I'll be enjoying the game in HD. Sometimes it is better to live out of town and have smaller companies for services. They seem to understand what the people want better. "

" I've subscribed to DirecTV for years, which means I've invited my friends and family over for the game the last couple years whenever it's on NFL network. By the way, NFL network is actually quite cool, especially their condensed replays of games I missed, and their pre/post game commentary. Last year they had a marathon of great Packer games, as I recall. "

" I had no idea that I would miss this game! The Cowboys are looking great this year. I was excited about this game. And I'm not about to sit in a bar to watch a football game. Back when ESPN started broadcasting games, my husband and I predicted that eventually we'd have to pay for each game we wanted to watch, like Pay Per View. I'm surprised that the Super Bowl isn't like this already. Give me back the good old days. "

" To racefan: I just checked the Century Tel website and they don't list either the NFL network or the Big 10 network on any of their options. Can someone that has Century Tel tell me if they offer these 2 channels? "

" RE: Shooter Just an FYI - I just signed up for Dish Network and I have month to month service, no contract and for the same fee as I would with a contract. The only difference was if you had a contract, you got some free "perks" like DVR and free hardware warranty. I can cancel whenever I want, with no fee. Something to look it into. Its double the channels and for less then my cable. "

" You don't have to sign up for anything. Just go down to one of the many bars in town that will show it. The NFL network stinks. It's announcers are pathetic. If you want more subscribers, do a better job at producing the game!! "

" The NFL network is not to blame in this case. Charter and Time Warner don’t want the big ten and the nfl networks to be available to expanded basic customer. They want to put it in a sports package and charge customer more for the sports package. Basically charter wants to make more $$$ off these channels in high demand. As far as the HD, Charter carries CBS HD but not Fox HD. I’ve been a charter customer for years; I am on the verge of switching any minute. The only thing I don’t like about satellite companies is the contracts you have to agree too. I always read about the La Crosse drinking problems in the Trib, well where do you think many of the Packer fans will go to view there beloved Packers? Um??? The BARS! "

" daddylonglegs..I get Fox Games in HD. The only network I dont get all the games in HD is CBS. CBS had not signed with all the cable or dish companies for HD. Fox has with Direct TV and many cable companies. This is going to get good. I am willing to bet within 6 months Warner will pay the NfL and Big 10. SURVEY TIME: What are you currently paying for cable or dish? Me. Dish 60.oo "

neena wrote on Nov 9, 2007 12:38 PM:

" Why in the world do you subscribe to cable if you don't like any of the channels anyways?? Go back to watching 4 channels and buy a pair of rabbitt ears. When I see/hear people complain about things they have to pay for that they don't use/need/like ie:schools or channels on cable, I think to myself: Hey, I am 26 years old, and by the time I get to retirement age, which will be like 75 by then, there won't be any social security left, so I guess I am just going to quit paying in. "

" TO Kevin. I have the NFL and Big ten and have gotten 60 addtional channels in the last 5 years and my only rate increase was from the services I chose and the taxes. For around 60 bucks I have high def and more channels that I can watch. "

antieverything wrote on Nov 9, 2007 11:06 AM:

" Who is to blame? Your cable companies thats who. For years they rested on the fact that the customers would always be there.High rates, poor programmimg and quality. They made tons of money in the 80s and early 90s.That is why these huge names bought all the small fish companies. They thought there was a monopoly and got burned. Now with competition and the dishes kicking their behinds they are whining because they are being "Charged a fee" for a great demand product. So sorry Time Charter and co.. You are too late. "

" Jerry Jones can eat my shorts. The value added content, behond that one packer game that cable or satellite tv can add to any ones life doesn't add up. Save a buck in your own personal budgets and drop both. "

daddylonglegs wrote on Nov 9, 2007 10:24 AM:

" Earth to local Fox station, how about you get with the times? CBS has broadcasted HD football games for how long? and Fox still hasn't last time i checked. Anyone with a HDTV and a OTA receiver and rabbit ears can pretty much get HD ABC, CBS, PBS, and non HD Fox (its still digital, just not HD). Anyone who has watched a game on CBS (HD) and then watched one on Fox will know what i'm talking about. "

racefan wrote on Nov 9, 2007 9:08 AM:

" Call CenturyTel and sign up for DTV service. Not only does CenturyTel offer the NFL network they also offer the Big Ten Network to all their customers, at a rate lower the Charter offers there current service. "

" When the NFL and The AFL merged in 1970, which is the birth of modern football, The commish said that foot ball will always be on free tv. Then ESPN got their hands on it. Back then 40% of the united States did NOT get Espn. The nfl network is crap, and I will listen to game on Radio. When they take the playoff games away, they will distroy themselves. "

WhipItGood wrote on Nov 9, 2007 7:24 AM:

" I've read in other articles that the standard practice of cable channels is to charge 10-25 cents per subscriber. The NFL Channel is no different. That charge will inevitably hit my bill. Why pay for another channel that I won't watch? I've already receive something like 100 out of 120 channels that I don't watch and I'm paying for those. Though tier programming is a start in the right direction, I long for the days of totally ala carte subscribing... "

" The NFL and the Big Ten are the greedy ones here. The local cable company lost money again this past quarter. If you want football..pay for it. I'm now a football or sports buff so why should I? "

kbg23 wrote on Nov 9, 2007 7:04 AM:

" RE: Big Spender "Stiff" us with the cost of the NFL Network on Basic Expanded? You can take away QVC, MTV and fifty other channels. In Wisconsin, people WANT to see the Packers. If my costs go up for channels I don't want, what makes your money more important then mine? And you are wrong. The NFL won't come crawling back. I recently canceled Charter after years of crappy service and it felt great! I signed up for Dish Network. More people in WI and MI had called that week then in a previous year. Charter (in Madison) lost 15% of it's customers in one week in this area. Cable companies are a crock. "

shkyhnds wrote on Nov 9, 2007 4:03 AM:

" Big spender....No that is not what this article is saying. It is saying that the cable companies want the consumer to pay more for this type of programming and the NFL wants it to be part of the cable companies' expanded basic, which I would say 90% of their customers already have. So the cable companies are the ones being greedy here. "

Big Spender wrote on Nov 9, 2007 2:42 AM:

" So what? This is just one more ball game out of hundreds. If sports fans want their games on cable, fine, let them pay for it, but Charter and Time are right not to stiff the rest of us with the costs for the 'NFL Network.' The NFL is being greedy here--they're copying the NBA which pulled itself off the major TV networks for short-term gain. Well, like many others, I don't watch the NBA any more, and I have survived. I'll survive a no-NFL life too--there are many alternative sports on cheap TV. Stand up the the NFL and NBA; later they'll come crawling back once they realize that there's a limit to what cable customers will pay. "
